John Joyce's "Fire & Ice" in an action packed fast moving, multi location thriller set in the context of the Cuban Missile Crisis in the early 1960's, which I remember as a schoolboy. Using telepathy, a maverick Russian academic secretly takes control of a USSR Nuclear Submarine, to cause a major nuclear incident. Both USSR and US governments are working to prevent this. Joyce has researched his story very well, and his descriptions of The Grand Canyon are particularly well done. The story is fast paced and creates a palpable sense of the tension that would exist in such a scenario. I highly recommend this book.Product details

Fire Ice edition by John Joyce Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Like a full moon arising, a new Tom Clancy is on the ascendancy on the other side of the Atlantic. His name is John Joyce and in Fire and Ice he takes the reader from the frigid depths of the North Sea to the baking depths of the Grand Canyon, to the most secret lairs of power in Moscow, Saint Petersburg and Washington. He mixes the latest high-tech gadgetry with the psychic lore of Native Americans to build a nail-biting tale set in the time of the Cuban missile crisis when John Kennedy was president of the U.S. and Nikita Khrushchev was the Russian leader. To complicate matters, the well-intended on both sides, who are trying to avoid atomic disaster, are beset by hawks who believe their opportunity to destroy the enemy has come at last; a Russian submarine armed with an atomic torpedo is misdirected by malcontents to destroy the American naval blockade of Cuba.
Joyce manipulates his characters to fit all the pieces of his mosaic together in this imaginative and satisfying book. Despite many temptations, the author avoids pretension when introducing the reader to complicated pieces of machinery. He avoids filling space with the dimensions of ball bearings and the tensility of springs. The story sails forward on flowing writing that is as smooth as the journey of a nuclear submarine slicing through the deep waters of the North Atlantic.
The Russian settings in Fire and Ice are every bit as detailed as the ones on the submarine, the Grand Canyon, the landscapes in the dark depths of the oceans. In an endnote, the author speaks about his journey to the Grand Canyon. But even though he does not say so, one suspects that he familiarized himself with Moscow and St. Petersburg by walking the streets with notebook in hand. Intrigue, adventure, and the basic decency of the majority of people are the hallmarks of this entrant into the field of international thrillers.
Well written page turner keeps you enthralled till the end. if you like Coben, Child, Connolly, De Mille or baldachi you'll like Joyce
Great interaction between the two scenarios. Well written with good character development
A real page turner, hard to put down....
I enjoyed the book. It moved right along and had a great story line. It kept my interest. Peter korth.
I don't normally read one off books but I was not disappointed at all. The story was really quite good and kept me engrossed until I finished it.
It is an interesting story based the world of the Cuban Missile crisis of the 1960s. It captured some of the tension that gripped the world as we wondered whether the Americans or the Russians would blink first. This version gives an different slant to the story that filled the media at the time. The focus is on the special mental powers o individuals on either side of the Iron Curtain divide and the efforts of the security services of these Super Powers to apprehend and control these individuals. After entering the world of the novel it became difficult to put the book down.
